Some Musical Memories

September brings with it a renewal, even as it takes us into Winter. With falling leaves comes a new school year, a new repertoire. It’s always quite striking just how music is imprinted in our minds in the way that we interact with the world: with our emotions, our past, our future. This past week, while I was traipsing along the Irish countryside instead of singing alongside everyone at rehearsal, I was reminded of the power of music and memory at almost every turn, especially through many songs we have performed together. I bopped along contentedly to Beidh Aonach while in County Clare, at the surprise (and perhaps some dismay at my dismal attempt at Gaelic) of my companions. On a more serious note, I couldn’t help but think of Famine’s Lament when learning on different stops about Irish history. I even bumped into a few versions of Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies throughout my wanderings…and that’s just naming a few...In all, though, all of these musical moments urged me to hurry up and head back and work on making more music together, and ultimately creating and sharing more connections, more memories. I’m curious to hear about some of your favorite musical memories, Bella Voce-related or not!

It's astounding! As I visualized your travels in Ireland, I was suddenly taken by something that goes back to high school -- do you remember this choral piece?

I am a happy wanderer / along the mountain track
And as I go, I love to sing / My knapsack on my back
Val de ree, val de raa, val de ree, val de ra a a a a a
Val de ree, val de raa, my knapsack on my back

I wave my hat to all I meet / and they wave back to me
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet / from every greenwood tree
Val etc.

I just looked it up on YouTube and found this treble version (in German):

Hi Sandy,

I'll have to check it out! I'm not sure that I know that piece; sounds great! It is funny how memory is sort of brought forth by an association...when I read high school, i was thinking of my high school chorus' numbers and taffeta gowns...and then I thought about how anyone who has experienced high school choir should watch this hilarious new show, Glee on Fox...some mental wanderings of a sort, I guess...
